DorthySomething, I mean Everything, tells me we aren’t in ARPANET land anymore. Thank the nodes!

My name is Melanie Morales and this is my first semester as a graduate student in the Mass Communication program. I received my undergraduate degree here five years ago in the same department and there has already been changes in what I learned then! So to see how far the actual internet has come through the video – even if it didn’t touch on the iPhone era – just blows my mind! Side note: I really hope Cindy shows this video every year. The generation who never knew dial-up needs to know what a blessing they hold in their hands!

With that being said, I didn’t know a lot of what the video showed, so pretty much everything they talked about was interesting to me. For example, I never knew the internet was a government-funded project. Again, thank the nodes they released it to the public in 1992 so people could invent the “email” and lay the foundation for “www” and keep the world spinning.

There’s no doubt about it – the internet has definitely changed the way we communicate with each other and disseminate information. Now, the new normal is “home is where the Wi-Fi connects automatically” and where a computer is hand-held and not taking up an entire room. Moreover, the internet has become a necessity for many jobs and careers to perform daily duties. As the pioneers said in the video, it became more than what it was ever intended to become which is GREAT and POWERFUL, but with power comes great responsibility. It’s up to us as users to take the responsibility seriously. What do you think that means? How do you do that today? Do you even agree with that statement?!

Packets, IMPs, ARPANET(?!)…OH MY!
