Hi there, my name is Randy Estevanes. This is my second year as a graduate student, and I’m expected to graduate this December. Ever since becoming a graduate assistant for the fundamental of digital and online media, I’ve tried to be more attentive to social media and technology news.
Watching this video, it’s crazy to think how far technology has come. The first computers took up an entire room and only sent data back and forth. Now, you have a computer in the palm of your hand that can send emails, play music, surf the web and can make calls. I’m pretty sure everyone gets that I’m referring to a phone, Yes? No? Ok.
An interesting/shocking part of the video was realizing that AT&T and IBM didn’t believe that computers would be the next big thing. Today, we have companies that specialize in one area partnering with or buying out other companies in a different area. Companies do this, because they want to be a part of the next big thing! It makes you wonder if the integration of phones and computers would’ve happened faster if AT&T invested in creating the first computer networks.
According to a 2012 Bloomberg article, the first “smartphone” was created in 1992, but it was never sold to consumers. If AT&T took a chance, we might’ve had the first smartphone in 1990.
