I appreciate websites that have a clean and crisp feel to them. I don’t like popups that I immediately have to close out of as soon as I visit someone’s site. I also like having the information I need presented to me from the beginning. I have a very busy schedule and don’t really have time to waste searching for what’s important, I need easy and simple access.
My first choice is texasmonthly.com. Yes, there are ads on their website, but I think it’s done very tasteful. I don’t have to close out of any popups, just easy access to their content. Their navigation bar is straightforward, I can easily click the topic I want to read more articles about.
Their site is very minimal, black print on white a white background and the latest news is always on top so I can click easily read the content I want more information about without having to scroll forever to find it.
Pitchfork is a website very similar to Texas Monthly. They also have a very minimal template with a small, yet eye catching pop of red for their links. I can easily navigate between music news, album reviews, new music and festivals, all topics which are of great interest to me. Even the apple ad just below the navigation bar looks like it is part of the website because of it’s minimalist look and various shades of grey.
My final selection is quite different from the other two. It is loud and bold and it plays music when you enter. It is the website for the Amy Winehouse documentary. Unfortunately, the site does take a few seconds to load, but then you are suddenly hit with AMY and those striking, heavy-winged black eyeliner, eyes. One of her songs is playing in the background, as it should. You are even presented with the option to turn the music off, and it fades out gently instead of just immediate silence.
